I heart StitchCraft

Today I hauled on out to Petaluma for a private craft business session with Nicole Vasbinder (aka Queen Puff Puff), proprietor of a hip new sewing studio in Petaluma’s cute downtown area. And boy was it worth the drive!

First of all, I got there early and was able to hit up Copperfield’s Books again where last time I’d unexpectedly scored a used copy of a book I’d had my eye on: Just Pockets. I couldn’t believe it! Okay so the book turned out to be a bit of a disappointment, but it was used and therefore cheap so I don’t feel so bad. I didn’t come home with anything this time around, but I probably should have picked up that used copy of Great Sewing Accessories-To Sew that caught my eye. With some updated fabrics, some of those projects could be pretty darn cool. Gah! Oh well.

But I digress! The real point is that when 12:55pm finally rolled around, I walked up the stairs with great curiosity to the StitchCraft space…and I was sooooo lovin it! I oohed and I aahed and even though it’s a relatively small space, my eyes couldn’t stop traveling around to look at all the great notions, fabrics and machines that are so nicely lined up throughout the studio. If I lived in the area I’d be signing up for classes left and right.

My session today was a customized version of the How to Start Your Own Crafty Business class Nicole teaches over at Stone Mountain and Daughter in Berkeley. I’d first discovered Nicole through another Stone Mountain Class — Handbags Level II of course! =} Not only did I love the class, but after learning more about all the cool ventures she undertakes — bagmaking, teaching, selling fabric and notions, to name a few — I thought to myself: dang girl, that’s the kinda stuff you wanna be doing!

And so I’d been planning to sign up for the Crafty Business class, but after reading the description I just felt that I wouldn’t quite get as much out of it in a group setting, so luckily for me Nicole was up for a private class! She was so patient and generous in letting me tap into her wealth of knowledge: taking all my questions, sharing her experience and offering advice. I came away from our session with tons of things to think about as I go down the path of figuring out where to go from here with my own small business. Thanks Nicole!!!
