“Man bags” for Roberto and John

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

They’re unisex bags really, but definitely suited for men. Especially considering that they were co-designed by the husband Jimmy, for two very special fellas: our Masters of Wedding Centerpieces Roberto and John, who are seen here politely showing off their new gifts.

This was a really fun project for Jimmy and me because, even though it took us forever to complete, it was a joint handmade venture that we hoped would show our appreciation to John and Roberto just that much more. We made them in different sizes and colors so they wouldn’t be too matchy matchy.

I sketched out the bags on a whiteboard based on Jimmy’s very specific descriptions and requirements (things like “it should hold one of those medium-sized Mead spiral notebooks” and “there has to be a pocket for cell phones and a zipper pocket for wallets” and “nothing too complicated, just simple and functional”). I even had him bust out the measuring tape and give me exact dimensions.

Then, we went shopping in my fabric stash and he chose every element from the selection I gave him, from the sunbrella exterior and cordura nylon lining, to the color and widths of the velcro, straps and bias tape, not to mention the type of hardware (metal vs. plastic)!

Jimmy’s been lobbying for me to make one for him. Hm…maybe after the holidays!

The Big Lug gets a mention in Etsy’s Spotlight series

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Jimmy noticed a spike in the number of product views and hearts at my Etsy shop yesterday and found that one of my Big Lugs had gotten a spot (3rd row, center) in an article on oversized bags called Gift Ideas: Big Bag, Big Statement! YEA!

We were both totally psyched to have the Big Lug be in the collection of 21 big bags featured in the article, and it definitely gave me an extra energy boost as I was sewing new stuff up yesterday. Many thanks to Etsy blog writer TeenAngster for that!

You got a…what??

Monday, October 20th, 2008

That’s what I imagine Jimmy will say when he finds out what I just scored. For I just acquired my very. first. MANNEQUIN! I’ve hardly had her for more than an hour and I’ve already put her to work modeling my latest accessory item, the quilted corduroy neck warmer:

First, more about the mannequin. I got this from an amazing local business called Mannequin Madness. I discovered Mannequin Madness while looking for places that would take some huge bricks of packing styrofoam off my hands since that stuff isn’t recyclable in my area. Well, I think someone was trying to tell me to go check this place out, because soon after noting MM down as a styrofoam recycling option, I randomly came across it again on Yelp while searching for something else entirely. And then I came across it again in an email newsletter from Ladies Who Launch, which featured Mannequin Madness and its owner Judi Henderson-Townsend!

Mannequin Madness rents and sells used dressforms, mannequins and mannequin parts and is a business to be commended not only for recycling over 100,000 pounds of mannequins a year, but also for their cool tagline which cracks me up every time I read it:

We work with a bunch of stiffs and dummies and love it!

Now on to the neck warmer! We’re still enjoying mostly sunny days out here in Alameda, California but I can definitely feel the chill creeping into the air. I’ve been wanting to throw some accessories into my current mix of bags and pouches, so I figured a cozy little neck wrap could be just the thing. And with all the soft, fuzzy corduroy in my stash for all the Big and Little Lugs I make, what better material to use to help fight the chill!

The corduroy neck warmer opens and closes with two silver snaps and can be worn in any of the ways shown, folded over in half, or however your heart desires. It looks great underneath a coat, or on its own and since it’s a short wrap as opposed to a full scarf, it’s less bulky, can be stashed away in your bag, AND — one of my favorite benefits — you won’t have to worry about it brushing up against any public toilets when you’re out and about! =P

The neck warmer will be posted to the Etsy shop within a few days. Thanks for looking!

Update: Here’s a better look at my mannequin (who’s in need of a name, hm…). I dressed her to protect her modesty, but you can see that she’s got everything but legs and came with a great stand on wheels. Here she is, modeling The Big Lug - Flower Power Edition.

The latest in Lugs: The Big Lug - Flower Power!

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

These turbulent times seem good occasion to release a little Flower Power upon the people, so as Emeril would say…BAM!

And a couple more views of the pleated body and velvety smooth corduroy top.

They’re not there yet now posted, but I think these will be the last of the large bags I post to the shop before Bazaar Bizarre. Wait, I think I said that already last time. Sooo uhhh…just thought I’d share the fruits of my labor today! And now off to get ready for a dinner date with the hubs and some friends. Woohoo I’m leaving the house!

The Vinyl Snap Pouches are up!

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

I started listing my new Vinyl Snap Pouches on Etsy this afternoon thanks to Jimmy’s new Nikon D90. I did one photo session with all the pouches together and then solo shots of the Chocolate Brown pouch just to make sure the whole setup turned out okay. Tomorrow I’ll work on shooting the rest of the colors individually.

I’m also excited to have made good progress on a couple of Big Lugs in new prints, too! Hopefully I’ll have those posted by next week, and then I think I’ll start getting ready to close up shop temporarily to get serious on building inventory for the Bazaar Bizarre San Francisco Holiday Show on November 30th. Whee!

I love Wednesdays

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

There are two big reasons why I love Wednesdays. One is that Design*Sponge, via Lauren & Derek from  supercute SF-based store The Curiosity Shoppe, posts its DIY Wednesdays entries. I look forward to this every week. The other reason, at least through today and sadly not again until next season, is that Project Runway is on! Now that Jerrell is gone, for me it’s a toss-up between Korto (how do you pronounce that anyway?!) and Leanne. I won’t even say anything about Kenley…except: ACK!!

This particular Wednesday, I’m ALSO happy because I finished my first batch of Coupon Cases!

vinyl coupon cases, closed

The insides contain a sweet treat of cheery color, too!

There are threads to be cut, a product name to be reconsidered and photos to be shot, but otherwise these are ready to go!

While I’m at it, I thought I’d also share a shot of my favorite new craft supplies storage solution. IKEA’s GRUNDTAL magnetic knife rack + their GRUNDTAL magnetic spice containers = the perfect storage system for my most frequently accessed supplies: fabric scissors, clothing labels, binder clips and elastic!

Addicted to podcasts

Friday, October 10th, 2008

I love sewing to episodes of Project Runway playing in the background. I guess it feels like we’re all in it together, trying to crank stuff out before the next deadline. But when Project Runway reruns aren’t on, The Martha Stewart Show and The Ellen DeGeneres Show are over and I can’t take anymore of Tabitha’s Salon Takeover (which always seems to be on), I turn to my collection of good old audio podcasts.

I can listen to podcasts all day long and seem only to be limited to the 4GB capacity of my old iPod Mini. My all-time faves are by far: NPR’s Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me and NPR’s This American Life. The New Yorker Fiction Podcast is a close runner-up, and I’ve also really been appreciating the BusinessWeek SmartAnswers podcast. I’m told that I’ll love the TED Talks series also. I have a love/hate relationship with my MorningCoach.com podcast, but I listen to it almost every day. Mostly I appreciate it. =]

Here’s a list of all the podcasts I currently subscribe to. You can find and subscribe to all of these free podcasts on iTunes, but a lot of them are also available through their respective websites, which I’ll link to in the list below if I can find it.

Today, I added One Minute Mandarin! Why not? I would have added Taiwanese but can you believe? They didn’t have it.

DIY wedding ring pillow

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Kevin and Olivia’s ivory silk ring pillows weren’t too hard to construct once I figured out what I wanted them to be. Each pillow was 8 inches square, wrapped once around in a feather edge ribbon, topped with artificial magnolia flower petals and secured with a flat, silk-covered button. The rings, one for each pillow, were attached with a narrow velvet ribbon. Here’s a reminder of what they looked like:

And, thanks to Tinou, here they are in action! The ring bearers are soooo adorable.

Here’s the how-to for one 8×8 inch ring pillow.

Materials:
I bought my materials from a few different places, but most of the materials can be found at your basic crafts/fabric shops such as Jo-Ann Fabrics or Beverly’s, if you have one of those near you.

  • Pillow
    • 2 squares of 9×9 inches ivory dupioni silk
    • 16″ length of 3/8″ wide feather edge ivory satin ribbon
    • 12″ length of 1/4″ wide violet velvet ribbon
    • 2″ square scrap of ivory dupioni silk
    • 2″ square scrap of lightweight cotton or featherweight interfacing
    • 7/8″ flat cover button
    • cream white faux magnolia flower
    • flat faux pearl bead

Tools:

  • Sewing machine
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hand sewing needle (to attach button) and ivory thread
  • Scissors

Steps to make:

1) Take apart the faux magnolia flower and cut out individual petals
This flower separated by removing the plastic stamen (the center tip) of the flower and simply pulling all the layers apart. Cut the trio of petals into individual ones. Snip off the thick bottom portion of each petal to remove excess bulk. If you skip this step, you may find it difficult to hand sew the button onto the flower.

IMG_0002 IMG_0003 IMG_0006 IMG_0010

2) Trim 5 of the petals into a smaller size
Cut out a piece of paper to use as a template for the smaller flower petal. For each petal, fold the petal in half lengthwise, place your paper template on top of it and trace around the shape. Then, with the petal still folded in half, trim the petal to size. Repeat until you have 5 small petals.

IMG_0007

3) Create the bottom layer of the flower
Start with the larger petals. Stack one petal on top of another to create a pair of petals, allowing the bottom petal to peek out slightly from the top. Using your hot glue gun, squeeze a dab of hot glue onto the lower tip of the bottom petal. Place the top petal back into position, and hold the two petals in place for a few seconds to allow the glue to set. Repeat this for the remaining 4 pairs of petals.

IMG_0019 IMG_0021

Finish off the bottom layer by stacking one pair of petals on top of the other to create a circle of 5 pairs of petals. Insert a drop of hot glue in the center of the circle, between each stack.

IMG_0022 IMG_0023

Here’s what it looks like from the back (oooh):

IMG_0024

4) Create the top layer of the flower
The top layer of petals contains only single petals, so you’ll simply place a dab of hot glue on the lower tip of one of the bottom pairs of petals, then lay a small petal on top of the large pair. Repeat this for each of the 5 small petals.

IMG_0025 IMG_0026

Since the couple’s colors were lavender and green, I decided to add the little green leaves back onto the flower. The edges of this piece had a bit too much brown in it, so I trimmed that off as much as I could without making it too uneven. Then I hot glued that puppy right on!

IMG_0028 IMG_0029

5) Create the silk-covered flat button
Cut out the circular template on the back of the flat button package. Take your scrap of silk and lay it on top of some featherweight interfacing (I fused mine but it’s not necessary), trace a circle onto the silk from your template and cut the circle out.

IMG_0030 IMG_0032

Center the flat side of the cover button onto the back side of your silk-and-interfacing layers. Here, the cover button instructions say to use a pencil eraser to push the fabric onto the teeth of the cover button. I don’t know about you, but I can never get this to work. So I cheat and use the rubber mold that comes in the regular (i.e. non-flat) 7/8″ cover button kits. Place your silk, interfacing and button on top of the rubber mold. Push them down into the rubber mold, keeping the button centered onto the fabric. NOW you can push the fabric towards the center, put the back cover onto the button and follow the rest of the instructions which say to use a spool of thread to help you snap the back cover onto the button. PHEW!

IMG_0033 IMG_0034 IMG_0036 IMG_0038

Pop this out and you have a lovely, matching silk button.

IMG_0041

I think I’d better stop here for now so I can drop off my latest orders at the post office before the first pickup! But by now you’ll have your pillow embellishment all ready to go, and all you have left is to sew up the pillow and attach all the fixin’s!
