I know that’s not grammatically correct. But that’s what I is! Sooooo much happy. Here are all the reasons I am happy today:

1) I had the honor of submitting a guest post to Etsy’s blog, The Storque, and it went live today! And Etsy readers are so full of love and kind words. I love it! The Storque gets a whopping 2 million pageviews a month — that’s a lot of eyeballs! So we’re taking the liberty of feeling semi-famous…at least temporarily. Read on, if you please: “It Takes a Village to Craft a Handmade Wedding“.

2) A lovely gal on Etsy sent me the sweetest note entitled “Spotted your bag in the wild”. She said she saw a girl with a cute bag at Whole Foods in Oakland and asked where it was from, and it was mine! Awesome that that happened, and double-awesome that she went to the trouble to let me know about it. I am oozing with love and gratitude.

3) Our entire house is strewn with fabric and pouches and sewing implements because I’m preparing for the Bazaar Bizarre craft show at Maker Faire at the end of the month! I’m SO excited to get to be a part of the show this year, as I’ve always been in awe of Maker Faire. I’ll admit I’m intimidated by the amount of people that are expected to be there (the number 80,000 has been floating around), but I’m much more psyched than scared!

4) Earlier this week, I found out that I also get to be a part of Renegade Craft Fair SF again this year – YEA! The event will take place July 18-19 from 11am – 7pm, at Fort Mason’s Festival Pavilion. It was such a great event last year, and I’m sure it will be just as grand this year!

5) When it rains, it pours?! The folks over at Madison Marquette, which owns a bunch of shopping centers here in the Bay Area (amongst other places), are looking for an innovative new business to help them grow San Leandro’s Bayfair Center mall and are running a contest called Retail*Star. The grand prize winner gets a FREE one-year lease on a retail space in the mall, plus a good chunk of seed money to get their business started. I was one of 66 contestants to submit my business idea to the panel of judges via a 3-minute presentation and 2-page written description, and I made the first cut as one of 15 semi-finalists!

6) There are a bunch more little mini things like the fact that I just had Henry’s Hunan Hot & Sour Beef for dinner followed by a bite of dark chocolate. But I’ll end with the fact that I just scanned in this photo that we had taken last weekend at a Mother’s Day brunch at the Marriott, and it makes me smile. They caught Gramma in a blink, but that’s not anything Don won’t be able to fix in Photoshop I think. But it was just such a great family-filled whirlwind of a weekend, from pitching my Retail*Star thing Saturday morning and booking it over to SFO to get to Santa Monica Pier to celebrate Mom’s 65th birthday then crashing at Ah-Yi’s; to this all-you-can-eat-plus-complimentary-family-photo brunch, followed by more family time and then off again to LAX and back home in less than 48 hours. Phew! Though it was short, it was event-filled and somehow particularly fulfilling. This photo cracks and warms me up all at once.

In conclusion, I have plenty of things to be happy about. And therefore I am!Similar Posts:

The latest in my collection of pouches: the 10-inch wide “Longer is Better” zipper pouches!

So far there are two versions of this 10″ pouch: one measures 5.25″ tall and the other 4.25″. An inch may not sound like a big difference, but the 20% difference gives it a whole new look in my opinion. Being the person in charge (because I’m the only person…minor detail), I took the liberty of producing them both!

I pulled out all my favorite fabrics for these pouches and am building a mass collection of them in anticipation of the STORM of orders I’m sure will come since all of you will undoubtedly love them as much as I do. ;P ESPECIALLY when you notice the silver grommet punched into one of the top corners, as shown in the 10 x 4.25″ Ms. Bitch pouch below. Not only does it add a silver sliver of bling to the pouch, it also provides an opening through which I’ve strung a silver beaded keychain. I know there are a bazillion pouches out there, but I’m happy to say that I haven’t seen any others quite like this.

Opposite the grommet is a “grab tab” made of cool seatbelt material to help you zzzzzzzzzip this puppy open, as you can see on the Worker Bees pouch:

And, most pouches have a fun “surprise inside” lining like this one, on the Lurking Leopards pouch!

Finally, I’m offering an option in the shop to pick yourself up a different piece of hardware to slide through the grommet: either a 1.5″ or 2″ steel snap ring for the possibility of hooking on any number of things to your pouch. Other pouches, for instance, more keys…or to allow you to hook your pouch onto the strap of your handbag!

photo from jspace3

I swear officer, I never received my 4th Quarter 2008 Sales and Use Tax form! And, subsequently, I didn’t even think about submitting payment. I did however receive my notice of delinquency on Friday, after which I got my butt right on it, crunched the numbers and handed my hard-earned money over. Plus a delinquent fee…and interest. WAAAH and a slew of upside down smilies! Sigh. I know I know, I take full responsibility for it (sorta) but a girl can still grumble.

As if that didn’t hurt enough, the added salt on my wound was the reminder that the California sales tax goes up by a whole dang 1% on April 1, 2009. YIKES! That makes my county’s sales tax a whopping 9.75%. Ugh. To see how much additional money you’ll have to fork over in your county, here’s the State Board of Equalization’s chart on the new tax rates (pdf).

And that sad news reminds me that shortly thereafter, prices for USPS mailing services will also increase. Starting May 11, 2009 our postal friends will not only bump the price of a 1-ounce First-Class Mail stamp from 42¢ to 44¢ (I can’t even keep track of the stamp increase these days), but other services like Standard Mail, Package Services, Parcel Post and Extra Services (delivery confirmation, insurance, that sort of thing) will also climb.

But but, I JUST re-did my Etsy shipping prices to reflect the January 2009 change! Well, thank goodness for Etsy’s shipping profiles and batch shipping features at least.

Now, back to pouting. Or maybe to clean my workspace. The latter probably a bit more productive.Similar Posts:

Shave minutes off of your work day with this collection of handy shortcuts for managing your Etsy shop, Gmail and of course Windows XP. Come on, you know you're excited.

There are no shortcuts to any place worth going? Rubbish! For without my daily shortcuts, I would be going nowhere fast. Or at least, somewhere a lot more slowly. No disrespect to Beverly Sills from whom the quote originated, especially since I’ve gone and taken it all out of context.

So I was reading the chapter in David Allen’s Getting Things Done on how to process your inbox to empty, and he wrote:

If you’re in a large-volume e-mail environment, you’ll greatly improve your productivity by increasing your typing speed and using the shortcut keyboard commands for your operating system and your common e-mail software. Too many sophisticated professionals are seriously hamstrung because they still hunt and peck and try to use their mouse too much.

How true! How many times have you hovered next to a co-worker and been driven mad by their slow typing and/or cumbersome fumbling between mouse and keyboard? “GAH! Ctrl+Shift+Right Arrow!”, I’d scream in my head! “Ctrl+Shift+Right Arrow, why don’t you?!” Not that I have that problem working from home any more, but still.

So I was inspired to pull together a collection of handy shortcuts I’ve adopted for the tools I use most often these days: Etsy, Gmail and of course Windows XP. Come on, you know you’re excited.

Shortcuts for your Etsy shop

Etsyhacks
For Etsy I recently started using a handful of etsyhacks to save some time. Etsyhacks are little programs created by the code-tinkering husband of an Etsy seller that alter the view of your web pages and basically allow you to take shortcuts between actions.

Say for example that you have to leave feedback for 10 customers. Etsy has a convenient batch feedback tool to let you submit all your feedback from one form, but you still have to tab from one customer to the next, selecting the appropriate radio button and copy/pasting the feedback for each customer individually. Even if you use keyboard shortcuts, that can be a lot of tabbing and Ctrl+V-ing.

Well thank goodness for geeks! Ian at etsyhacks offers a tool called Fast Batch Feedback where, if you have the same Positive feedback to leave for everyone (since presumably you’re gonna wanna leave shiny happy positive feedback for all those wonderful customers right?!), you can truly just select Positive once, type up your feedback text once, and submit!

image from etsyhacks

There are two ways you can install etsyhacks: one is by using the Greasemonkey add-on for Firefox, the other is by using bookmarklets. I use Greasemonkey and it’s a total no-brainer to install and get right to using the etsyhacks.

One of my favorite hacks is Copy Listing, which gives you the ability to quickly copy an existing product listing instead of starting fresh from a new listing and filling out all the fields from scratch.

My next favorite is Edit This Item, which lets you jump to a specific page you want to edit for a product listing instead of going back one page, forward one page, or skipping to the very last page. I’ve always hated having to wait for the Tags page to load when I’m editing a listing, so with this hack I can skip right over that page. Yay!

There are a slew of others that Ian discusses in his etsyhacks blog. Thanks Ian!

Using Gmail to Filter Etsy Order and PayPal Payment Emails
I’ve also found it helpful to set up some filters in Gmail that help me quickly find emails related to Etsy orders I’ve received. This process involves 1) setting up an email filter and 2) creating a Quick Link to it in Gmail.

1) My Gmail filter

2) My Quick Link, which sits in the left column of my Gmail window

This way when I’m printing shipping labels and want to quickly compare the customer’s address in PayPal to the shipping address they supplied on Etsy, I click on my Quick Link and then it’s just a matter of using the keystrokes k, j and o (see below for Gmail keyboard shortcuts) to toggle back and forth between the Etsy and PayPal emails.

Keyboard shortcuts for Gmail
I haven’t been able to bring my unread messages down to zero ever since I got lost in the final throes of wedding planning in January 2008. But having finally taken the time recently to learn more keyboard shortcuts for Gmail, I’m a tad closer.

These are the four keyboard shortcuts I use every morning to quickly scan through the latest messages in my inbox and immediately trash messages that I know I don’t even need to open:

k = Move to newer conversation

j = Move to older conversation

x = Select conversation

# = Delete

Then, for the messages I do need to open and take action on:

c = Compose

o or <Enter> = Open

r = Reply

a = Reply all

f = forward

l = Label

<tab> then <Enter> = Send message

g+i = Go back to Inbox

see the full list of Gmail keyboard shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts for Windows XP
Then of course there are the operating system shortcuts. There are a bazillion and I think most people already have a bunch of these in their repertoire, so here are some that may be less well known and are irrefutably handy (at least I think so):

General

CTRL+any of the arrow keys (Moves the insertion point to the beginning of the next/previous word or paragraph)

CTRL+SHIFT with any of the arrow keys (Highlight a block of text)

ALT+F4 (Close the active item, or quit the active program)

CTRL+ESC (Display the Start menu)

Microsoft natural keyboard shortcuts

Windows Logo+D (Display the desktop)
Windows Logo+M (Minimize all of the windows)
Windows Logo+SHIFT+M (Restore the minimized windows)
Windows Logo+E (Open My Computer)

Windows Explorer

LEFT ARROW (Collapse the current selection if it is expanded, or select the parent folder)

RIGHT ARROW (Display the current selection if it is collapsed, or select the first subfolder)

see the full list of Windows XP keyboard shortcuts

And now the sewing machine and audiobook beckon. Lucky you, since I was about to continue with my favorite shortcuts for:

Microsoft Excel

Okay okay, sorry I couldn’t help it. It is true that I have a small obsession with my mannequin and all her possibilities, including removable arm. And it is also true that the arm shown in the photo above is actually her left, not her right.

But I so love the fact that I can use her like this for product shots, and I don’t know why I never took advantage of the removable arm before. Actually it’s probably because I used to focus only on handbags, not so much on the handheld pouch/purse/wallet.

All this nonsense just to introduce…the Stash ‘n Dash Zippered Wallet in Forest Faux Bois!

In a very short time, this will be available in the Pouches section of my Etsy shop. In less than two hours as a matter of fact!

In the meantime, this manifestation of the Stash ‘n Dash Zippered Wallet offers a delightful surprise on its backside: an applique of two lush green leaves made of 100% wool felt. Spring is almost here, after all! And, like all of the other pouches in the shop, this is fully lined, top-stitched and built with interfacing to give it some meatiness and structure. I hope you like it!

Updated on 2/6/09 to include instructions to add the newly updated Etsy Shop application to your personal profile page!

Looking for a way to get some more exposure for my products and Etsy shop, I spent the morning creating a Facebook Page for eleen.etsy.com, complete with an Etsy Mini (a widget that displays a subset of products from my shop).

A Facebook Page is basically a profile page for your business. It’s linked to and administered from your personal Facebook page and is distinct from a Facebook Group in the sense that groups are “meant to be built around a group of people rather than an individual business or brand”, says the author of Facebook for Business: Opportunties and Limitations. Also, you can add applications to Pages but not to Groups. For another helpful comparison of Pages vs. Groups, see this article on Facebook Groups vs. Facebook Pages.

Anyway I didn’t think Facebook Page creation was the most straightforward process in the world so if you’re looking for guidance on building your own, here’s how I went about it.

But first! I present a screenshot of my new Facebook Page to all who are interested:

Tada!

Okay here goes (these instructions assume you’re logged in to your Facebook account already):

I. Create a Facebook Page for your Etsy shop

1) Go to Facebook Pages and review the description and setup instructions
You can also get there from the Home page by clicking on Advertising (in footer links at bottom of page) > Pages (2nd row of links at top of page). Thanks to Amy’s “Using Facebook to Promote Your Etsy Shop” video on YouTube’s Indie5Collective channel for pointing me in this direction.

Make note of the fact that you cannot change the name of your Facebook Page once you’ve created it. I didn’t catch that and it sucked. You have to delete and create a new page if you need to change your page name. Ah well, better now than later.

2) Go to Create a New Facebook Page, choose your category and enter your shop name
I chose Brand or Product > Online Store > and named my Page “eleen :: good stuff * hand made”.

3) Add the basic information about your shop
I uploaded my shop logo in the Picture section, filled out the Information section and created a few photo albums to start out with.

4) Add your Etsy Mini to the Page
Here’s the fun part! There are two apps that allow you to add your Etsy Mini to Facebook. One is the Etsy Shop app, which adds your Etsy Mini to your personal profile (instructions below). This app is not currently available for adding to Pages.

The My Stuff by Gigya app lets you add your Etsy Mini to your business Page (as well as to your personal profile). This is the step for adding your Etsy Mini to your business Page.

Click on the Edit Page link in the top right corner of your page.

Scroll to the bottom of the list of default Applications on your page.

In the More Applications box, click the Edit (pencil) icon and choose Browse More.

Now you’re on the Application Directory page.

In the Search Applications field (towards top right of page), search for “My Stuff”.

On the results page, click on My Stuff by Gigya.

Click on the blue Add to Page button in the right column.

Click the Add My Stuff button to confirm that you want to add this app.

So here’s where I got confused, because from there I got a blank page.

If you have the little Facebook toolbar at the bottom of your browser, you can click on Page Manager > Pages > Edit Page.

If you don’t have that, go to your Facebook Home page and in the right column under Applications, click Page Manager > Pages > Edit Page.

Now find the My Stuff app that you added to your Applications list, click the pencil icon and select Edit.

Open a new browser window and go to Your Etsy. Under Promote in the left column, click Etsy Mini.

Build your Etsy Mini. I did 4 columns, 4 rows of thumbnail sized images.

Copy the code for the Flash version.

Go back to your My Stuff editing window and paste the code into the Add Code box.

Click Add to profile and be entranced by the interstitial animation.

Go back to your Page (either using the browser back button, or navigating to it from the Page Manager). You should now see your Etsy Mini! Note: If there’s a giant green arrow, click on it to make the Flash load. Also, if for some reason it still doesn’t show, head back to your My Stuff edit page and click the Refresh Profile link.

5) If you have a blog, you can import your entries into the Notes application.
Why not?! Click edit in the Notes section, then under Notes Settings just click “Import a blog”. Instant notes!

6) Add apps as you see fit, drag the content around til you like the order, then Publish the Page
My Stuff was the only app I added to start out with, and I deleted the Video app for now since I have no content for it.

II. Update your Facebook personal profile

7) Add the Etsy Shop application to your personal profile
Etsy provides a handy Facebook app that lets you easily display up to 6 shop items on your personal profile page. You can choose to display it from either your Wall tab or your Boxes tab.

On the Wall tab, the module displays in the left column beneath your Description, Information and Friends boxes:

In the Boxes tab, the module displays in a larger format with product names. This is where I’m placing mine.

From the Etsy Shop application page, click on Go to Application, then Allow access.

Complete the form with your Etsy Username, the number of items you want shown (1-6) and whether you want to show items from your own Shop or from your Favorites. Click Add.

From the next page, Click Add to Profile. Note: The Favorites from your Facebook friends will not be added your profile page.

Choose where you want your Etsy Shop app to show up, either in your Wall and Info tab or your Boxes tab. Click Add.

If you’re happy with the placement shown, click Keep.

If you’d prefer a larger view of your Etsy Shop, click the pencil icon in the right corner of the box, and choose ‘Move to Boxes tab’.

III. Spread the word!
This I have only just begun to do, but here’s where I plan to start…

8) Link to your own darn page!
Maybe because it’s new and I’m not used to it, but somehow I find it really hard to get to my own Facebook Page. So now I not only have a browser bookmark to it, I also link to it from several different places.

On Facebook, in the Information box underneath your profile photo and description

On Facebook, in the Posted Items box. From your Facebook Page, click the Share button. Select the Post to Profile tab and Post. Now you’ll have an item posted in your Posted Items box, which displays by default under the Boxes tab of your personal page. I’ve moved this to my Wall tab for (maybe) better visibility.

In your Etsy Shop Announcement and/or Etsy Profile

From your blog (see Step 10)

In your email signature… You get the picture!

9) You fan their page, they’ll fan yours
Lots of Etsy sellers are more than willing to be a fan of your page if you become a fan theirs, and you can find lots of threads in the Etsy Forums about Facebook and Facebook pages where sellers list their links in droves. Also, don’t forget to become a fan of your own page. This will add your page to the Info tab of your personal Facebook profile.

10) Use a badge, any badge
Well actually it looks like Facebook only provides one, but it looks like this and is available, along with Facebook’s usage guidelines on Promoting your Facebook Page outside Facebook.

11) Share and share alike
Use the Share button in the right column of your page to beg and plead your friends to become fans of your page and/or ask them to ask their friends to do the same.

12) Listen to the wisdom of those who’ve gone before you
The Pages portion of the Facebook Help Center and the Facebook Pages Insider’s Guide offer plenty of paths to follow to get you (and me) started in on promoting our pages. I’m sure there are countless other fine resources as well. If you’ve had good success with yours, I’d love to hear how you did it!

III. Track and optimize
Once your page has been published for about 48 hours, you’ll get free access to metrics on “user exposure, actions, and behavior relating to your Social Ads and Facebook Page” via Facebook Insights. I haven’t seen this yet since I only just published this morning. 36 more hours! Update: Here are my stats after about 6 days of the page being live. I got work to do!

Here’s Facebook’s take on which pages will be the most successful:

The Pages with the freshest, most engaging content stand to gain the most from this new product—since each track played, video viewed, review written and event attended can generate News Feed stories that propagate through the social graph. Facebook will accelerate the rate at which unknown entities become popular, and it will also fortify the position of those who are already recognized highly among users. Whether large or small, all artists, businesses, and brands have the potential for exponential distribution through the graph if they can engage users.

So, I can see how you could end up spending a whole lotta time on this. But I can also see how it’d be well worth the effort. We’ll see how it goes!

Aaaaaah, we did it. We made it through the holidays. Good for us! The Etsy shop is now re-opened, and all items are shipping within 2 short business days (or less) after receipt of payment!

I wanted to give a quick shop and product update, but first things first. My grandma turned 88 on New Year’s Day so I wanted to start off by saying: Happy 88th Birthday, Gramma!

Gramma’s kids, grandkids, grandkids-in-law and great-grandkids alike gathered together over the holidays to celebrate Gram’s 88th birthday, and we had a blast starting the evening with a buffet dinner and finishing it off with roundtable stories of the grandkids favorite memories of Gramma. What was even better was that Gramma had at least 3 stories to tell for each of our 1. We’re so blessed — and spoiled — to have a grandma like ours. This shot is from our storytelling session, where my aunt is helping to do the English/Taiwanese translation:

Alright, NOW back to shop updates. As I mentioned, the Etsy shop is now re-opened after our short holiday break and in it you’ll find “classics” such as the Big Lug and Little Lug handbags, alongside newer items like the Out ‘n About Convertible Wristlet and Decorative Pillow Covers.

In fact, one of the Decorative Pillow Covers made it to the Etsy Home Page the first day of our holiday break! It was the Gold Volumes on Grey, which is smack dab in the center of the 2nd row below:

Thanks to Etsy Front Pagers for uploading a screenshot of this to Flickr, and to Etsy seller Uncorked for selecting my item to include in her Treasury listing!

My 2009 will start off with some fine-tuning to my business goals for the new year, so my introduction of new products may initially be a little slow. I definitely intend to work on new designs, especially in the categories of smaller zip pouches and home accessories which I’m able to crank out a little bit faster and can therefore offer more of at more varied (i.e. lower) price points…which I think a lot of us can appreciate at this particular time.

Another thing I’m pretty excited about is the prospect of adding sewing patterns to the mix as well! This has been on my mind for several months, and now I’m ready to think more seriously about it and get at least a pattern or two drafted and tested.

I’m also incredibly psyched to be working on a DIY lifestyle site with one of my best friends and partner-in-crime Jenn Lim. We’ve been heads down of late getting the site ready to roll sometime early this year. More on this later!

So, I think I’ve got my work cut out for me and a little planning and organization is in order. One thing’s for sure, I think 2009 is full of good opportunities, and I can’t wait to make them happen! Happy New Year, everyone! Here’s to a great one for each and every one of you.Similar Posts:

It’s all too often that I reach into my bag for something, only to come up with a handful of receipts. Receipts from the grocery store, the fabric store, the gas station…even the library! Occasionally I shove them into my wallet, but that’s a rarity and the thing’s so small to begin with that it’s not a great solution anyway.

So came into being: the Envelope Pouch! I’m at a loss for a more creative name (but am open to suggestions), so that will have to do for now.

It fits all my receipts AND my coupons! Gone will be the days when Jimmy and I are out on Park Street and I smack myself on the forehead saying, “Aw dangit! We have a coupon for La Piñata on our fridge we could have used!” Nope, no sirree. For all current coupons will now have a happy and citrus-y home in my new Envelope Pouch.

Not only that, but there’s also a clear pocket on the backside of the pouch where I can stick outgoing mail. OUTGOING MAIL! Or checks that I have to remember to deposit! Or anything else I need to be able to remember that I have to do something with!

And that’s the scoop! These will be in the Etsy shop within about a week. I’m still in the process of test driving it and think I’ll be fine-tuning a couple of things, but hopefully there will be others out there who will find this the perfect solution to organizing the stray papers inside their bags!Similar Posts:

I had to let the bats loose in time for Halloween, so the Bats in Blue Skies Kisslock Frame Pouch is now on Etsy! I’m loving how the blue-bordered polka dots of the lining match perfectly to the bat-filled blue sky on the outer fabric. It’s such a happy, playful combo.

The Bats in Blue Skies Kisslock Frame Pouch is made with designer cotton fabrics and contains a layer of interfacing and fleece to give it added shape and padding. The purse frame is in a pretty matte silver color measuring 4″ across. At 3.5″ tall and 2″ deep, the pouch is a tight fit for credit cards but is perfect for all the miscellaneous items floating around in your purse. I use mine for all the stuff you see in the photo above. =]

I seem to be on a blue (well, more like aqua or turquoise) streak at the moment, as evidenced by this pouch and the two Little Lugs that are also available: Modern Bud in Blue and Honeycomb in Blue. Maybe it has to do with not being ready to let go of summer’s sunny blue skies? Or a yearning for the blue waters of Lake Tahoe? That could be it. But, the shades of blue are just callin’ out to me lately so it can’t be helped!Similar Posts:

It’s been such an action-packed week already. I hit my self-imposed deadline of finishing a set of 8 Little Lugs by yesterday…and 3 of them have already been spoken for! Thanks to you fine ladies who’ve swooped them up — you’ve made me one happy camper indeed! =D

Here’s how the Little Lug – Honeycomb in Blue edition turned out:

And this here’s how the Little Lug – Modern Bud in Blue edition worked herself out:

Next to their big sister, these cuties seem miniature indeed. BUT…the Little Lugs are sizable totes in and of themselves, measuring in at 12″w across the top x 13″h. And they’re packed with 3 slip pockets inside to help you stay organized, not to mention a key tether — complete with swivel hook — aaaaaand the ever essential lip balm holster!
